A systematic classification system is fundamental to understanding the complex religious landscape of Riga. Each site was categorized according to four primary criteria: functional status, denomination, architectural style, and historical period.
Functional Status (Active / Inactive): This distinction identifies whether a site continues to operate as a place of worship or has been repurposed for secular use. It provides insight into the survival, decline, or transformation of religious communities over time.
Denomination: Sites were classified into historical and contemporary faiths, including Lutheran, Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Methodist, Old Believers, and newer religious movements. This allows for analysis of demographic shifts and interfaith dynamics within the city.
Architectural Style: Architectural analysis was conducted to categorize sites into Gothic, Baroque, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, Modern, or other stylistic classifications. This enables the study of aesthetic trends, cultural influences, and historical periods of construction.
Historical Period: Sites were assigned to chronological categories: medieval, Baroque era, 19th century, Soviet period, and post-independence. This allows users to trace the evolution of religious infrastructure in relation to political and social developments.
